Called a hoax by some, global warming is a real issue with real consequences. It is the continuous, rapid increase of the average temperature of the Earth. Scientists say that unless we curb global-warming emissions, average U.S. temperatures could increase by up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit over the next century.
Global warming, a form of climate change, is caused by an increase of concentrations of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. Known as the greenhouse effect, these pollutants trap heat and warm the planet. These emissions are caused mainly by human activity, such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and farming.
Fossil fuels are one of the major contributions to global warming. According to the World Wildlife Fund, “Electricity generation is the main cause of carbon pollution in Australia as 73% of our electricity comes from burning coal and 13% from burning gas.” Also, almost 20% of greenhouse gas emissions come from deforestation. Lastly, roughly 16% of greenhouse gas emissions are caused by livestock.
There are many effects of global warming, including rising sea levels because of the melting of sea ice, and more extreme weather events. For instance, as the ocean’s surface temperature increases, there will be more intense hurricanes. Places all over the world will face new heat waves, floods, and downpours, as well as the destruction of habitats for plants and animals. Higher levels of air pollution can even lead to infectious disease outbreaks as it creates favorable conditions for pathogens and insects.
Hi, my name is Molly. I chose to make this website because global warming affects all aspect of our life. It is not only an environmental issue, but a social issue, economic issue, and a political issue. I believe we all deserve to have a livable future.
